At Holy Family School staff, students and parents have formed a Catholic faith community, which recognises the development of the whole person, and accepts the challenge to encourage and develop positive attitudes to faith, life and learning.
Our teachers develop constructive relationships with students to maintain a positive, encouraging and caring working atmosphere in the classroom.
Teachers plan activities and present curriculum content which caters for individual learning needs and styles, and aims to enable all students to achieve success.
PASTORAL CARE AND STUDENT WELFARE
Holy Family School has a whole school approach to student welfare. Our policies supports our belief that every child enjoys a happy and safe learning environment, with constant support through resilience and social skills programs.
The welfare of our new Prep students is considered vital. To ensure that they soon feel right at home we have an extensive Transition program linked to our Buddy program. Developing `buddy' relationships not only supports our newcomers but also develops leadership skills in our senior students who are also encouraged to undertake roles such as School Captain, Sports Captain and Student Representative Council.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
At Holy Family we belong to a very vibrant parish community where our parish-based Sacramental programs prepare the children for Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Religious Education is an intrinsic part of our curriculum that is both central to and sustains our whole school vision.
CURRICULUM
Literacy and Numeracy
Literacy and Numeracy influences all aspects of our lives and enhances our quality of participation in society. At Holy Family we are dedicated to a daily-uninterrupted two-hour teaching block of Literacy under the CLaSS (Children's Literacy Success Strategy) project.
Similarly, our school has undertaken SINE (Success in Numeracy Education), a numeracy initiative from Prep to Year Six. Mathematics is taught through rich and varied tasks to ensure understanding of the concepts taught.
Progress in Literacy and Numeracy is continually monitored to ensure that each child's needs are being met.
Integrated Curriculum
An integrated approach to our curriculum enables us to teach Health, Technology, Science and Studies of Society and the Environment in a meaningful and connected way.
Information and Communication Technology
Computers and technology are a vital tool in today's society and our students use computers across the curriculum. Computers are readily accessible, being located in every classroom and the fully automated Library.
LOTE
In today's globalised world, we recognise the cultural diversity within our school and the importance of exposing students to another language. At Holy Family the students from Prep-Year 6 learn Italian and are immersed in the language, culture and traditions of Italy.
Visual and Performing Arts
Student's intellectual, imaginative and expressive potential is developed through our Visual and Performing Arts Program. Our specialist staff develops the student's talents in the Arts while the opportunity for private instrumental tuition is available to all students through the music department of our neighbouring secondary school.
Physical Education and Sport
Our comprehensive physical education program promotes lifelong participation in physical activity through the development of attitudes and fundamental motor skills. The whole school swimming program, Inter School Sporting competitions in the senior school and access to private tennis lessons during lunchtime, further enhances this program.
Childcare
Within our school grounds we offer a quality `Outside School Hours Care Program' providing both before and after school care.
Parental Involvement
At Holy Family School we encourage parental involvement. At the beginning of the school year we provide sessions for parents to learn how to be effective as a classroom assistant in the CLaSS program. Other opportunities exist through the Education Board, Canteen, Uniform Shop and the many other special occasions for parents to be involved.
Communication
Our school aims to keep in contact with parents in many and varied ways. Parent information nights, weekly newsletters - alternating between a general newsletter and curriculum newsletters, school reports, student portfolios, parent/teacher interviews and direct contact with teaching staff all play a role in keeping parents informed of their child's progress as well as the many exciting activities and events at our school.
Avila College
35 Charles St, Mount Waverley, 3149
Phone: (03) 9807 6677
Avila is a Catholic Regional Girls' College catering for approximately 1000 students from Years 7 to 12. Our feeder primary schools are Holy Family, Mount Waverley, St. Leonard's, Glen Waverley, Good Shepherd, Mulgrave, St. Christopher's, Syndal and St. Mary Magdalen's, Jordanville. Preference is given to girls from these schools.
Avila College provides quality education with a curriculum that balances traditional academic studies with innovative programmes and vocational pathways.
The College was established in 1965 by the Presentation Sisters who accepted the offer by the parishes of the Waverley area to establish a Catholic Girls' College. Central to this was a commitment to encouraging girls to achieve both academic and personal success. This continues to be our aim. From a small beginning, Avila has grown into a vibrant, outward-looking Catholic Secondary College, pursuing excellence and searching to give meaning to its motto "Ecclesiae Filia" (Daughter of the Church).
We believe that students learn well when they are respected and valued. Our curriculum and pastoral care programmes are designed to provide each student with the opportunity to succeed and to realise her individual potential.
Behaviour and discipline policies are based on Christian values which uphold the dignity of the person. Each girl is encouraged to grow towards a womanhood of faith, hope and love.
The College Principal is Ms. Liz Gleeson. For further information ring the College on 9807 6677
